A Commitment to Excellence - by Jeffrey Dettelis
From the first time the Tres Hombres met to write a business plan for U Evolve Buffalo our top priority was to create a weekly budget for reinvestment back into the Grotto in the form of equipment. As we discussed our vision we kept coming back to the saying "we can't do things bush league". If we are going to to have 15 people in a dumbbell class then we need 15 sets of all the dumbbells. If we are going to keep the powerlifting club then we need to commit money for powerlifting gear, and right down the line. If we wanted to create the highest quality fitness and training environment we must provide the people with the tools they need to succeed. For our business to be operating with anything less would be like asking a plumber to come out to work on your plumbing with an empty truck and no tools. The thought is absurd.
Some of our greatest pet peeves as personal trainers and business owners working in and out of box gyms and boutique facilities was the all to often lack of ownership's reinvestment back into the gym for new or updated equipment. Years would pass and nothing would change. I am by no means suggesting that a facility needs every latest and greatest gadget that hits the market, but I always found it to be common sense, that if a business was having success, the success of that business was in large part due to the patronage of its customers. Therefore it's ethical to provide your customers with the equipment they need to excel toward their fitness goals. Obstacle Course Training has our customers interest right now so we changed our budget and purchased climbing ropes and peg boards. This is Business 101. Be fair, listen to your customers, appreciate their patronage and reinvest back into them.
We love to providing incentives to our customers, having flash sales, discounts, swag give away's and fun stuff like that when we can. But free is fleeting. We find it more beneficial to build a fitness facility with the highest quality information, instruction, atmosphere and equipment that is conducive to your success.
This in turn goes back to our second business principle; Create a Sense Of Community. Which leads to our second biggest pet peeve. Cliques, ain't nobody got time for that. There are fewer things more annoying than cliques and people that are uncool to other people. We want to make sure that everyone that comes to the Grotto is not only comfortable with whom ever is instructing the Classes, Programs or Training Sessions, but also has the opportunity to join us and all the great people that support our business with events both inside and outside of the Grotto. What good is getting healthy and bettering ourselves if we don't make an attempt to go out and apply it. We love traveling with our competitive members and support them as they display their feats of strength in powerlifting competitions, push their agility and endurance in obstacle course races, or display their physiques in bodybuilding. We even come together to give back to our community by pairing up with other like minded advocates for the cleaning up of local beaches and raising environmental awareness.
We are literally just getting started and closing in on our first 6 months of business. It has been nothing short of a whirlwind, a labor of love and humbling to have the support of so many. We look forward to continuing to grow on all levels and reinvest or resources back into the community that has put so much trust in us. It's evolution baby!
