Lifestyle, Exercise & Nutrition: Never Stop Learning

By Jeffrey Dettelis

As you may have already guessed by our name, U Evolve Buffalo believes in change. Not just change for the sake of change. Rather change when a better method has been brought to light. It then needs to be self experimented with, tested and shown that it bears positive results.

The real art to being a fitness professional is knowing when to call upon these new found methods and not just have all of your clients suddenly switch their current regimen because you have a shiny new toy to play. This would be irresponsible. The attitude of it works for me, so it’ll work for you, is one of ignorance and laziness. When you are working with a large swath of clients, especially of the general fitness population, you are going to need a wide variety of nutrition and exercise methods to accommodate their needs.

Our LEaN Program (Lifestyle, Exercise & Nutrition) is a customizable nutrition program. We encourage a healthy lifestyle and smartly planned exercise. It is this precisely executed combination that will bring individuals closer to their health & fitness goals. This is not Biggest Loser or a weight loss contest. This is a content and information based program. Using sound  nutrition principles and many, many, years of experience working (and still working daily) with clients to find the right balance to obtain their body composition and fitness goals.

Every gym or fitness facility that I have been associated with, other than my own has gone the route of Weight Loss Contests. These contests use a prize and marketing to attract would be customers. Hell, some of them even call themselves Biggest Loser Contests or other catchy marketable names. The prize will motivate some contestants to engage in extreme diet and exercise. The proprietor of the contest reaps the benefit of a great before and after picture while the contestants are left to fend for themselves when it’s over. Many times a large number of contestants quit in the first few weeks once they realize they are out of the running for the carrots and stick prize. And so the cycle continues of another failed weight loss attempt.

Be aware of the click bate and sound bites. It seems that whenever I hear the If It Fits Your Macros (IIFYM) pitch it is always followed by the promise of eating Pop Tarts, Lucky Charms and being able to look like a fitness competitor. Others are still leaning hard on the eat bacon and lose weight sales pitch. Pushing a bastardized version of Dr. Loren Cordain’s Paleo Diet or Mark Sisson’s Primal Diet making bacon sound like a super food. Just remember, these are sales pitches, click bait, sound bites, tag lines and hash tags. But where is the content? If you have not continuously updated your knowledge base, especially on nutrition, this industry will pass you by fast. This is common. It happens everyday.

As fitness professionals we need to not only be up to date on the latest research, we also need to self experiment. I understand that people get stuck in their ways and they also like positive reinforcement. It’s not easy or comfortable to change your position on a stance. Especially when it becomes a brand. Well I’m sorry, brands are good for marketing but not good for long term results for a wide demographic of people. A well experienced fitness professional with the clients best interest in mind will steer their clients toward what will bring them a higher probability of success. Not toward whatever they currently have for sale. You have to be honest and able to tell someone that this program might not be right for you, right now. I think they would appreciate the honesty.

We still  train hard in the gym, all - the - time. Our clients want to get strong, fit and in shape. So we better damn well be practicing what we preach and have the best exercise and training methods available at our disposal. At UEB we work with a very wide demographic of people. We take it very seriously about being well versed and equipped to accommodate their needs and goals. This doesn’t happen from an office chair. You have to get your hands calloused in the gym and do the dirty work first, before you can espouse information (likely badly plagiarized and regurgitated information ) from the ivory tower.

Do not accept a lesser program.
Do not mistake marketing for information.
